Vidya Lakshmi portal: how to actually apply

Vidya Lakshmi (vidyalakshmi.co.in) is the government's single-window portal for education loan applications, letting students apply to multiple participating banks with one common form instead of visiting each bank separately.

Last verified: 1 September 2026.

Step 1: registration

Create an account with your email and mobile number, then verify both via OTP. Keep your login details saved — you'll return to this account to track every application's status.

Step 2: the Common Education Loan Application Form (CELAF)

Fill in one form covering:

  • Personal and academic details (current and prior qualifications)
  • Course and institution details, including the fee structure
  • Loan amount required and purpose breakdown (tuition, hostel, books, travel for study abroad)
  • Co-applicant details (usually a parent), including income and existing liabilities

Step 3: selecting banks

Once CELAF is submitted, you can apply to specific banks listed on the portal. Applying to more than one bank in parallel is allowed and often sensible — approval timelines and final terms can differ meaningfully even for the same profile.

Step 4: tracking and follow-up

The portal shows application status, but final decisions, document verification, and disbursal happen at the bank's branch or lending team — the portal is a routing and tracking layer, not the lender itself. Follow up directly with the bank if status doesn't update for an extended period.
