CGPA uses CBSE's own formula (percentage ÷ 9.5). The 4.0 GPA scale has no single official Indian conversion, this is the common banding used by study-abroad consultancies, not a university-issued equivalence.
How the conversion works
CBSE marksheets since 2011 report both a subject-wise mark and an overall CGPA. CBSE's own formula for the equivalence is:
- CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
- Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
This 9.5 divisor is the same formula most other Indian boards and colleges use informally when a CGPA-to-percentage equivalence is needed, even though it was originally published for CBSE specifically. If your board issues its own official conversion table, use that first, this tool is a general-purpose estimate.
What about the 4.0 GPA scale?
India has no single official percentage-to-4.0 conversion. US universities and study-abroad consultancies each apply their own banding, and this tool shows the common approximation used across most of them (roughly: 90–100% as 3.7–4.0, 80–90% as 3.3–3.7, and so on down the scale). When an application asks for a WES or ECE credential evaluation, that agency's own conversion is the one that counts, not a self-calculated estimate.
