Estimate only, for planning. Actual EMI depends on your lender's exact compounding method, processing fees, and any rate changes over the loan term. Section 80E lets you deduct the interest portion from taxable income for up to 8 years — see how that works.
How the moratorium calculation works
Most Indian education loans don't require you to pay the full EMI while you're still studying. Instead, they give you a moratorium period — typically your course duration plus a grace period of 6–12 months after you finish — before regular EMIs start.
What happens to interest during that period depends on your lender and loan terms:
- Capitalized interest (the default most students end up with): interest accrues monthly and gets added to your principal. You pay nothing during the moratorium, but your EMI is calculated on a larger principal once repayment starts — and you end up paying interest on that accrued interest too.
- Simple interest serviced during moratorium: you pay just the interest portion each month while studying, so your principal never grows. This means a small payment during college, but a meaningfully lower total cost over the loan's life.
If you can afford the smaller payments during your course, servicing the interest is usually the cheaper choice over the full loan term — ask your lender directly whether they offer this option and at what rate.
