Central universities
Central universities (funded directly by the central government, distinct from state universities) generally charge tuition a fraction of private university fees, while several rank among the top institutions nationally in their subject areas. Examples students commonly consider include Delhi University's constituent colleges, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University, and Jamia Millia Islamia, among others — admission is typically through CUET (Common University Entrance Test) rather than a private university's own entrance process.
Top NIRF-ranked public colleges outside the IIT/NIT system
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) publishes annual rankings across categories (overall, engineering, university, and others). A meaningful number of state-run and centrally-funded institutions outside the well-known IIT/NIT names rank highly and charge public-institution fees — worth checking the current year's NIRF list for your intended subject rather than assuming only the most-advertised names are strong options.
State universities and their affiliated colleges
State universities and their affiliated government colleges are typically the least expensive route to a recognized degree, with fees a small fraction of private options. Quality varies more here than at the central-university or top-NIRF tier, so checking a specific college's placement record, faculty, and accreditation (NAAC grade) matters more than assuming all affiliated colleges are equivalent.
Distance and online degrees from recognized universities
UGC-recognized distance and online degree programs — including from IGNOU and several state open universities, as well as UGC-approved online programs from established universities — cost substantially less than an on-campus private degree, and can suit students who need to work alongside studying or whose families face a tighter budget. Confirm the specific program carries UGC recognition (not just the university's name generally) before enrolling, since recognition is approved program-by-program.
Apprenticeship-linked and skill-based degree programs
A newer, growing category combines classroom study with paid on-the-job apprenticeship, reducing both the effective cost of study and the time to a first paycheck. The National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme and degree apprenticeship programs run through select universities are the ones to look for by name, since "apprenticeship" branding alone doesn't guarantee UGC-recognized degree status — verify the specific program's accreditation before committing.
What actually matters more than sticker price
