College Costs
What IITs, NITs, private universities, and medical colleges in India actually cost for a full degree.
What a degree in India actually costs, all-in
Colleges advertise a tuition figure. What a family actually pays over the full course includes tuition, hostel, mess, one-time fees, and books/lab costs every year — often 30-50% more than the tuition number alone. This guide gives the full-course, all-in range for the institution types Indian students consider most.
Last verified: 1 September 2026. Fees are revised most years and vary by category, state quota, and specific institute — treat these as planning ranges, and confirm the current fee notification on the institution's own site before deciding.
Engineering: IITs, NITs, and top private universities
| Institution type | Tuition (4 years) | Hostel + mess (4 years) | Total, approximate |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIT (general category) | ₹8-10 lakh | ₹4-6 lakh | ₹12-16 lakh |
| NIT (general category, home state) | ₹5-6 lakh | ₹3-5 lakh | ₹8-11 lakh |
| Top private university (VIT, SRM, Manipal, BITS, Amity — varies widely by branch and campus) | ₹12-20 lakh | ₹6-10 lakh | ₹18-30 lakh |
IITs and NITs offer fee waivers for family income below defined thresholds — a meaningful number of students at these institutes pay significantly less than the headline tuition figure. Always check the current fee-waiver income slabs directly with the institute.
Medical: government vs private MBBS
| Institution type | Total course cost (MBBS, approx.) |
|---|---|
| Government medical college (state quota) | ₹5-15 lakh for the full course |
| AIIMS and other centrally-funded institutes | Under ₹10 lakh for the full course, among the lowest in the country |
| Private medical college (management/NRI quota) | ₹50 lakh to over ₹1.5 crore for the full course, varying enormously by state and institute |
The gap between government and private MBBS costs in India is the widest of any course type — this is the single biggest reason NEET rank and category matter so much for total family cost, not just admission.
Law: NLUs and private law schools
NLU fees for the 5-year integrated program typically run ₹10-15 lakh all-in including hostel, while private law schools with strong placement records can range from ₹15-25 lakh over 5 years.
What families consistently underestimate
- One-time costs at admission — caution deposits, registration fees, and initial equipment/lab-coat/instrument costs that don't appear in the advertised annual fee
- Annual fee escalation — many private universities increase fees by a fixed percentage each year, so year 1's number isn't what you'll pay in year 4
- Books, a laptop, and lab/studio material costs, which for engineering and design courses can run into tens of thousands per year
- Category and quota effects — state-quota vs all-India-quota, and general vs reserved category, can change the fee by a large multiple at the same institution
