IIT B.Tech fees: the full 4-year picture

IIT tuition fees are broadly standardized across the IIT system for general-category students, set by a common council decision rather than varying wildly campus to campus the way private universities do — the bigger source of variation between IITs is hostel and mess cost, which follows each campus's own local pricing.

Last verified: 1 September 2026. Fees are revised periodically by the IIT Council — confirm the current fee notification on your specific IIT's website before budgeting.

Typical annual cost breakdown (general category)

ComponentApproximate annual cost
Tuition fee₹2-2.5 lakh
Hostel fee₹15,000-25,000
Mess charges₹40,000-60,000, varies by campus and mess plan
Other fees (registration, medical, gymkhana, etc.)₹20,000-30,000
Approximate annual total₹3-3.5 lakh
Approximate 4-year total₹12-14 lakh

The income-based fee waiver

IITs waive or reduce tuition fees based on family income, structured roughly as:

  • Full tuition waiver for family income below a defined lower threshold (SC/ST students receive full tuition waiver regardless of income)
  • Partial (two-thirds) tuition waiver for family income in a defined middle band
  • Full tuition fee payable above the upper income threshold

These thresholds are revised periodically by the IIT Council — check the current figures directly with your specific IIT's fee office, since even a modest income difference can shift a family from one waiver band to another.

What a fee waiver doesn't cover

Fee waivers apply to the tuition component only. Hostel, mess, and other charges are typically payable regardless of the tuition waiver band, though some IITs offer additional hardship-based support for these components on a case-by-case basis — ask the student welfare or dean of students office directly if this applies to your situation.
