National Scholarship Portal: how registration actually works

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP, scholarships.gov.in) is the Government of India's single application system for most central scholarship schemes, and for many state schemes too. You register once (One-Time Registration, or OTR) and then apply to whichever schemes you're eligible for each year, without re-entering your basic details.

Last verified: 1 September 2026. NSP's application windows and portal behavior change every year — treat dates below as illustrative, not a current-cycle deadline.

Step 1: One-Time Registration (OTR)

You register only once, ever, using:

  • Aadhaar number (linked to a working mobile number for OTP)
  • A bank account in your own name, seeded with the same Aadhaar
  • Your current institution's details (name, address, AISHE code if applicable)

After OTR, NSP issues an application ID — save this. You'll use it every year to log in and apply for that year's schemes, not create a new registration.

Step 2: Applying to a scheme

Once registered, you select the scheme(s) you're eligible for from your dashboard, fill in academic and income details, and upload supporting documents. Most schemes require:

  • Latest marksheet
  • Income certificate (issued by a competent state authority, not a self-declaration, for most schemes)
  • Caste/category certificate, where relevant
  • Bonafide/admission certificate from your current institution for the applicable year

Common errors, and how to fix them

ProblemLikely causeFix
Aadhaar face authentication fails repeatedlyPoor lighting, phone camera quality, or a mismatch between Aadhaar photo and current appearanceTry in daylight, hold the phone steady, or use the Aadhaar mAadhaar app's authentication option if NSP offers it that year
"Institution not verified" status stuck for weeksYour school/college hasn't confirmed your enrollment on their NSP institution dashboard yetContact your institution's NSP nodal officer directly — this step is manual on their end, not automated
Application shows "rejected" with no clear reasonUsually a document mismatch (income certificate date, category certificate name spelling vs Aadhaar)Check every uploaded document's name/date exactly matches your Aadhaar and application form, then reapply if the window is still open
Bank account not linked / DBT failure after approvalAccount isn't Aadhaar-seeded, or is a joint accountUse a single-holder, Aadhaar-seeded account; ask your bank to confirm seeding status before applying
Portal times out or won't load near the deadlineHeavy traffic in the last days before a deadlineApply well before the deadline, not on the last day — this is a known yearly pattern

A note on OTR face authentication issues

This is one of the most-searched NSP problems, and it isn't a bug you can fix from your end most of the time — it's usually a camera/lighting issue on mobile devices with the DigiLocker/Aadhaar face-auth step. If it keeps failing, try a different device, better lighting, or the desktop OTP-based route instead of face authentication where the portal offers a choice.
