Funding a foreign degree: how lender options actually differ
Study-abroad loans usually run larger than domestic education loans, and lenders price and structure them differently depending on whether they're a public bank, a dedicated education-loan NBFC, or a fintech lender built specifically around international study.
Last verified: 1 September 2026. Interest rates, loan limits, and collateral rules change frequently — confirm current terms directly with each lender before applying.
Public sector banks
Public banks (SBI, Bank of Baroda, and similar) generally offer the lowest interest rates for study-abroad loans among Indian lenders, but usually require collateral above the collateral-free threshold and have a slower, more document-heavy sanction process. Best suited when you have eligible collateral and time before your intake deadline.
Dedicated education-loan NBFCs
HDFC Credila, Avanse, and Auxilo specialize in education loans, including for study abroad, and are generally faster to sanction than PSU banks, with more flexibility on collateral for strong academic/institution profiles — usually at a higher interest rate than PSU banks.
Abroad-focused fintech lenders
Prodigy Finance, MPower Financing, and Leap Finance are built specifically around international students, in some cases lending without India-based collateral or a co-signer, using the admitted program and future earning potential as part of their assessment. These typically carry meaningfully higher interest rates than Indian bank options, and loan amounts or eligible institutions may be more limited — usually a fallback when collateral or a strong co-applicant profile isn't available, not a first choice on cost.
What to actually compare, beyond the headline rate
- Whether the rate is fixed or floating, and how it's linked to a benchmark that can move over the loan's life
- Processing fees and prepayment penalties — some lenders waive prepayment charges, others don't
- Moratorium terms — whether interest accrues (and compounds) during your study period, or is serviced with smaller "simple interest" payments during that time, which meaningfully changes the total repayment
- Currency of the loan — an INR loan disbursed from India carries INR repayment obligations regardless of exchange rate movement, while some fintech lenders may structure differently
