Study Abroad Costs
The real, all-in cost of studying abroad for Indian students — tuition, living costs, and funding proof, in rupees.
What studying abroad actually costs, before the brochure
Consultancy websites tend to lead with tuition alone. The real cost of studying abroad includes tuition, living expenses, visa and health-insurance fees, proof-of-funds requirements you must show before you even get a visa, and currency conversion costs on every transfer. This guide breaks down the full, honest number for the destinations Indian students consider most.
Last verified: 1 September 2026. Tuition, living costs, visa fees, and required fund amounts change yearly and with currency movements — treat these as planning estimates, and confirm current figures directly with the university and that country's visa authority before committing.
Canada
| Cost component | Typical range (INR) |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate tuition (public university, per year) | ₹12-25 lakh |
| Living costs (per year, outside Toronto/Vancouver) | ₹8-12 lakh |
| Proof of funds — Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) | A fixed amount set by IRCC, revised periodically; confirm the current figure before applying |
| Study permit application fee | A modest fixed fee in CAD, converted at the time of payment |
United Kingdom
| Cost component | Typical range (INR) |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate tuition (per year) | ₹15-30 lakh, higher for medicine and some specialized courses |
| Living costs (per year, London vs outside London differ meaningfully) | ₹10-16 lakh |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) | Paid upfront for the full visa duration, at a per-year rate set by the UK government |
| Maintenance funds you must show for the visa | A fixed monthly amount times the number of months of your course, up to a capped period, set by UK Visas and Immigration |
Germany
| Cost component | Typical range (INR) |
|---|---|
| Tuition at public universities | Often nominal or waived for many programs, plus a semester contribution fee (a few hundred euros) |
| Blocked account (Sperrkonto) requirement | A fixed annual amount set by German authorities, required as proof of funds before the visa is granted |
| Living costs (per year) | ₹7-10 lakh |
"Study in Germany for free" is broadly true for tuition at many public universities, but it is not the same as studying for free overall — the blocked account and living costs are real, substantial, upfront requirements.
What's easy to underestimate
- Currency conversion costs. Bank wire transfers and forex card loading both carry a spread plus fees, on top of the exchange rate — shop around; the difference across providers is often meaningful on transfers of this size.
- Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on foreign remittances. Remittances for education, when funded through an education loan from a recognized financial institution, currently attract nil or reduced TCS up to a defined threshold; funded from other sources, higher TCS rates may apply. Confirm current thresholds with your bank before remitting.
- Health insurance beyond the visa-mandated minimum, and a first-semester buffer for costs you won't have anticipated (deposit for accommodation, winter clothing, initial setup costs).
