State scholarships: why there's no single list that stays accurate

Every Indian state runs its own post-matric scholarship scheme, with its own portal, income limits, amounts, and deadlines — and states revise these every year, sometimes mid-year. A single static list of "state scholarship amounts" goes out of date almost immediately, so this guide focuses on how the system works and where to check, rather than publishing amounts that would be wrong within months.

How state post-matric scholarships generally work

• Eligibility is usually caste/category-based (SC, ST, OBC, EBC, or minority community) combined with an income ceiling set by that state
• Some states run their own portal; others route entirely through the National Scholarship Portal (see our NSP walkthrough)
• Renewal each year is typically required — a scholarship awarded in Class 11 doesn't automatically continue into Class 12 or college without reapplying and meeting a minimum attendance/performance requirement

Portal names, URLs, and the schemes they host change over time — search "your state name post matric scholarship current year" to find the live, current-cycle application page rather than relying on a bookmarked link from a previous year.

How to check if you qualify, in three steps

1. Confirm your state's current income ceiling for your category — this is usually revised each year and can differ meaningfully from the previous cycle's figure
2. Check whether your state requires OTR on the National Scholarship Portal first, or has its own separate registration — many states now use NSP as the front door even for state-specific schemes
3. Note the application window — most state scholarships open shortly after the academic year begins and close within a few months; missing this window usually means waiting a full year
