Questions from this paper

  1. State the term for undistilled alcohol containing a large amount of methanol.
  2. Justify the statement: graphite electrodes are preferred in the electrolysis of molten lead bromide.
  3. If 60 g of magnesium reacts with concentrated sulphuric acid according to Mg + 2H₂SO₄ → MgSO₄ + 2H₂O + SO₂, calculate the mass of sulphuric acid needed and the volume of sulphur dioxide liberated at S.T.P. [Mg = 24, H = 1, S = 32, O = 16]
  4. A gas cylinder can hold 150 g of hydrogen under certain conditions of temperature and pressure. If an identical cylinder can hold 450 g of gas G under the same conditions, find the vapour density and the molecular weight of G.
  5. Acidulated water is electrolysed using platinum electrodes. Why is dilute sulphuric acid added to the water, and what is observed at the anode?
  6. State Avogadro's law.
