About this paper

This is ICSE Class 10 Physics, Science Paper 1, from the 2015 examination, code T15 521. Section I and Section II are each worth 40 marks, so the paper is out of 80. The writing time is two hours, and the first 15 minutes are for reading only. Section I, Questions 1 to 4, is compulsory and is made of short parts on force, machines, light, sound, heat and current electricity. In Section II, Questions 5 to 10, any four questions are to be attempted, and several of them ask for a ray diagram or a machine diagram. Answers are to be written on a separate sheet. This copy contains the questions only.

Questions from this paper

  1. Rajan exerts a force of 150 N while pulling a cart at a constant speed of 10 m/s. Calculate the power exerted.
  2. The speed of light in glass is 2 × 10⁵ km/s. What is the refractive index of glass?
  3. A nut is opened by a wrench of length 20 cm. If the least force required is 2 N, find the moment of force needed to loosen the nut.
  4. A block and tackle has a velocity ratio of 5. Rohan exerts a pull of 150 kgf. What maximum load can he raise if the efficiency is 75%?
  5. A person standing between two cliffs, 480 m from the nearer one, shouts. He hears the first echo after 3 s and the second echo 2 s later. Find the speed of sound and the distance of the other cliff.
  6. A refrigerator converts 100 g of water at 20°C into ice at −10°C in 35 minutes. Calculate the average rate of heat extraction in watts. Take the specific heat of water as 4.2 J g⁻¹ °C⁻¹, of ice as 2.1 J g⁻¹ °C⁻¹, and the specific latent heat of fusion of ice as 336 J g⁻¹.
