About this paper

This is a solved copy of ICSE Class 10 Physics, Science Paper 1, from the 2018 examination, with an answer under every question. Section I and Section II are each worth 40 marks. The writing time is two hours, after 15 minutes of reading. Section I, Questions 1 to 4, is compulsory and covers power and horsepower, energy changes, a class II lever, lenses, critical angle, scattering and radioactivity. Section II, Questions 5 to 10, asks for any four questions, including a block and tackle of velocity ratio 3, a right-angled prism, a convex lens, a sonometer and uranium isotopes. A few Council misprints are marked, such as 20 kgf printed where 20 gf was intended on the pivoted rod. The answers work the numericals in full.

Questions from this paper

  1. State and define the S.I. unit of power. How is the unit horsepower related to the S.I. unit of power?
  2. The power of a lens is −5 D. Find its focal length and name the type of lens.
  3. Why is the ratio of the velocities of light of wavelengths 4000 Å and 8000 Å in vacuum 1 : 1? Which wavelength has the higher frequency?
  4. An object is placed at a distance of 12 cm from a convex lens of focal length 8 cm. Find the position and the nature of the image.
  5. A block and tackle of velocity ratio 3 lifts a load of 150 N when an effort of 60 N is applied. Find its mechanical advantage, and say whether it is an ideal machine.
  6. Name the isotope of uranium which is more easily fissionable, and write the nuclear reaction when uranium-238 emits an alpha particle to form a thorium nucleus.
