About this paper

This is the ICSE Class 10 Physics question paper, Science Paper 1, from the 2024 examination, code T24 521. It is marked out of 80, with two hours to write after 15 minutes of reading. Section A (40 marks) is compulsory. Question 1 has 15 multiple-choice items, including one assertion–reason item on ultraviolet and microwave radiation. Questions 2 and 3 are short answers on a radioisotope, a non-uniform beam, pulleys, echoes in oxygen and benzene, a 5 A fuse and the latent heat of ice. Section B (40 marks) has Questions 4 to 9, and any four are to be attempted, with a lens, the electromagnetic spectrum, two cliffs, a resonance tube and a transformer. This copy has the questions only.

Questions from this paper

  1. Sumit does 600 J of work in 10 minutes and Amit does 300 J of work in 20 minutes. Calculate the ratio of the powers they deliver.
  2. A fuse is rated 5 A. Can it be used with a geyser rated 1540 W, 220 V? Give calculations to justify your answer.
  3. How much heat is required to convert 500 g of ice at 0°C to water at 0°C? The latent heat of fusion of ice is 330 J g⁻¹.
  4. The image of a candle flame placed 36 cm from a spherical lens is formed on a screen 72 cm from the lens. Calculate the focal length of the lens and its power.
  5. Lata stands between two cliffs, 170 m from cliff A and 160 m from cliff B, and claps. Find the time taken to hear the first echo. Speed of sound in air = 320 m/s.
  6. 85 g of water at 30°C is cooled to 5°C by adding ice. Find the mass of ice required. Specific heat capacity of water = 4.2 J g⁻¹ °C⁻¹ and specific latent heat of fusion = 336 J g⁻¹.
