About this paper

This is ICSE Class 10 Physics, Science Paper 1, from the 2016 examination, code T16 521. Section I and Section II are each worth 40 marks, so the paper is out of 80. The writing time is two hours, and the first 15 minutes are for reading only. Section I, Questions 1 to 4, is compulsory and is made of two-mark parts on non-contact force, work and power, machines, latent heat, refraction through a prism, sound, current electricity and radioactivity. In Section II, Questions 5 to 10, any four questions are to be attempted. Answers are to be written on a separate sheet. This copy has the questions only. Printed page 5 is not in the scan, so part of Question 6 and Questions 7 and 8 are missing.

Questions from this paper

  1. A boy weighing 40 kgf climbs a stair of 30 steps, each 20 cm high, in 4 minutes, and a girl weighing 30 kgf does the same in 3 minutes. Compare the work done by them and the power developed by them.
  2. Calculate the mass of ice required to lower the temperature of 300 g of water at 40°C to water at 0°C. Specific latent heat of ice = 336 J/g and specific heat capacity of water = 4.2 J/g°C.
  3. A music system draws a current of 400 mA when connected to a 12 V battery. What is the resistance of the music system?
  4. Calculate the quantity of heat produced in a 20 Ω resistor carrying 2.5 A for 5 minutes.
  5. A pulley system has three pulleys. A load of 120 N is overcome by an effort of 50 N. Calculate the mechanical advantage and the efficiency.
  6. A battery of emf 12 V and internal resistance 2 Ω is connected to two resistors of 4 Ω and 6 Ω joined in series. Find the current in the circuit and the terminal voltage of the cell.
